Navigating high school is no easy feat. Every decision, no matter how small, can feel like it carries enormous weight. If you’re not part of the “in crowd,” it can seem like you’re trapped in a nightmare. You don’t have the trendiest clothes, you’re not dating anyone cool, and you’re not getting invited to the popular parties. All of this happens while you’re in a constant whirlwind of emotion, trying to figure out your future—sometimes making those choices yourself, sometimes having them made for you by adults.
Though aimed at young adults, the film’s themes are relatable to a broader audience. Writer Michaela Hamilton strikes a balance between typical high school experiences and universal themes of emotional processing and self-discovery.
Felicia Maxime shines in her role as Agnes. More than just a teenager wanting to fit in, Agnes begins the film insecure, always hugging herself, nervously picking at her lips, and avoiding eye contact with the popular crowd. Her transformation, if you can call it that, is dramatic. As she tries to imitate her sister or step out of her shadow, Agnes becomes increasingly reckless. She even joins the school play as a way to express her emotions without directly confronting them. Maxime’s portrayal of Agnes is raw and layered, pulling the viewer into the character’s turbulent journey.
Supporting actors like Edvin Ryding, Ida Engvoll, and Alva Bratt complement Maxime’s performance with emotionally grounded portrayals of their respective characters. Ryding’s character, in particular, stands out for offering a refreshing take on a teenage boy—sensitive and reflective, rather than cocky or superficial. Despite being part of the popular group, he seems to exist on the margins, which adds depth to his role.
At just over 90 minutes, A Part of You manages to tell a gripping story without falling into overused tropes. It’s a debut that leaves you wanting to see more of Felicia Maxime’s talent and Sigge Eklund’s directorial vision.
