Plot
Incoming freshman Benj is eager for a new start in high school. He sees this as an opportunity to make a move on his sister Alyssa’s friend Bailey, who he’s had a crush on for a while. His friends Eddie and Connor are excited to make a new name for themselves, and their other friend Koosh is eager to live up to his name – shared with his older brother and his reputation.
After a rocky first day, Benj’s senior assigned carpool Ruby takes him to a skatepark to deal fake drugs, and Koosh convinces the other three to be his plus three’s at his older brother’s party that weekend. While Eddie and Connor are reluctant, Benj jumps at the chance to officially pursue Bailey. When they arrive at the party, Koosh tells the three that his brother said only one can stay, and Benj convinces the others to let it be him so he can talk to Bailey. When she and Alyssa arrive at the party, Benj talks to them briefly before he’s left alone dancing. A group of older students call him over and asks him if he’s ready to “really fucking party” and he’ll “let [him] know when it’s time”. Meanwhile their chemistry teacher Mr. Studebaker gets increasingly unsober as he drinks and smokes at the party with makeshift bongs and fireball shots.
Meanwhile Connor, bored at Eddie’s house convinces the latter to steal his mom’s irritating boyfriend’s car to drive to the party and sneak in. When they arrive at the party, popular girl Katrina – who’s wasted – gets in the car believing that they’re her uber. Not knowing where she lives, they get taco bell and after passing out, she unconsciously defecates all over the inside of the car. Connor and Eddie debate leaving her at the fire department before eventually deciding to clean her, the car, and themselves up and bring her back to their house safely.
Back at the party, Alyssa gets criticized by her ex when confronting her, and Benj warms up more to Bailey. While having a drink, Ruby comes up warning Benj that the skaters they ripped off are at the party. When confronted, Ruby blames Benj entirely and gets punched in the jaw. Before they can attack Benj, Koosh’s older brother steps in, and after Ruby tases one of the skaters and Mr. Studebaker, a fight breaks out, in which Alyssa gets her nose broken by accident. Running away from the fight, Benj and Bailey kiss and share a moment. Meanwhile Koosh is plotting a “meet-cute” with a girl named Gabrielle who he’s been observing on security cameras.
Benj socializes at the party becoming more and more popular and dancing with Bailey and eventually runs into the older students who tell him it’s time. They bring him to a room where they’re snorting lines of what appears to be cocaine. Peer pressured, he does a line when he finds out it’s a drug called Ketamine. Bailey finds him, gets upset and leaves, right as the effects hit Benj. He disassociates for the remainder of the party until the cops are called. Koosh’s meet-cute fails and he dislocates his shoulder. He talks with Alyssa briefly at the hospital while Mr. Studebaker gets locked out of his car and walks home.
The morning after, after being berated by their mom, Benj confides in Alyssa and Alyssa comforts Benj, telling him to be himself. Connor and Eddie tell Katrina what happened, and Eddie finally sticks up to his mom’s boyfriend. At the pep rally, Katrina defends Connor and Eddie and apologizes. Inspired by Alyssa’s advice, Benj sings Stevie Wonder to Bailey and asks her out in front of the school – which she publicly rejects. However while leaving, she secretly turns and winks at Benj.
